玉茗堂四梦 ,又称"临川四梦"是指《牡丹亭》（又名《还魂记》）、《紫钗记》、《邯郸记》、《南柯记》这四个戏剧的合集。前两个戏剧属于儿女情缘题材，而后两个则涉及官场现实和政治问题。
在南宋时期，南安太守杜宝的独生女杜丽娘，听了家庭教师陈最良讲《关雎》后，做了个梦， 并爱上了梦中的书生。她在梦中遇到了他，醒来后因思念他而忧郁而死。杜宝将她葬在花园的梅树下，修建了梅花庵，嘱咐一位道姑照看。
杜丽娘的灵魂来到地府，但判官发现她还有未完成的姻缘，于是放她回到人间。一位书生柳梦梅前去京城赶考，寓居在梅花庵，与杜丽娘的鬼魂相遇并相爱。后来，杜丽娘指示柳梦梅挖坟并利用她的尸体复活，两人成为夫妻。柳梦梅赶考并成为状元。
柳梦梅奉托杜丽娘之命前往淮阳见杜宝，但杜宝不相信杜丽娘复活，试图处置柳梦梅，但最终皇帝查明真相，柳梦梅与杜丽娘相聚，全剧以欢喜的结局结束。
